The world’s first Inclusive ZERO WASTE Pilerne Thursday heritage market, held at St. John the Baptist Church Courtyard, Pilerne,North Goa and was inaugurated by Dr. P. V. Sarmokadam, Member Secretary, Goa Bio-diversity board in the presence of Parish Priest Fr. Derrick Xavier Fernandes, Curators Marius Fernandes and Dr. Gwendolyn De Ornelas and Senior Journalist Prakash Kamat.
Dr. Sarmokadam appreciated the over 24 local vendors who displayed numerous homemade products from food, pottery, plants, handicrafts, art, etc. He encouraged this painstaking initiative and promised all the help necessary to set up a processing plant and women’s agro-processing and marketing unit in the village premises if a suitable space is made available.
He appealed to the gathering to uphold this unity and social harmony by working selflessly for the betterment of others. Festakar Marius Fernandes said that “We humans unfortunately dump over 7million tonnes of plastic waste into our oceans, and are now causing the extinction of our aquatic species and plants across the world and damaging our ecosystem. This first world’s zero waste initiative will be taken very seriously and we cannot now wait for Governments, ngo’s or others, we have to do it ourselves”. Parish Priest Fr. Derrick Xavier Fernandes added that ZERO WASTE is not a mere slogan for us however it is a commitment that this heritage market will be hundred percent zero waste on 1st January 2023 and is a fitting way to bring in the new year. Senior journalist Prakash Kamat appreciated that this zero waste market has offered spaces to the Differently Abled Communities which will empower them and add value to their work. Co-Curator Dr. Gwendolyn De Ornelas applauded the women for driving this market from behind the scenes, working in the kitchens, offices and still making time to be here in the evening with their homemade authentic food and sweets to support the zero waste idea. The venue wore a festive look with people flocking from far and wide and were entertained by local musician Paul Fernandes regaling the crowds with Konkani classics. There was a “mollam making” workshop by Muriel Mascarenhas, game stalls, crèche, etc. The curators handed over the market to the President of the newly formed Pilerne Arts Socio Sports and Cultural Association Edmer Barreto who said that “we will make sure that this unique market will be much bigger, better. This Inclusive zero waste market will be held every Thursday from 4pm to 9pm.
