BICHOLIM: Students of Narayan Zantye College of Commerce, Bicholim experienced mass flowering of Strobillanthes callosa, also locally known as karvi flowers during their field trip on hillside and plateaus of Sahyadri range in Western Ghats on Monday organized by environmental studies department of the college environmental studies assistant professor Saili Parab and Commerce assistant professor Sonali Gaonkar.
The main attraction of Strobillanthes callosa in this region as flowers with purple colour bloom once every eight years, specifically in September and October.
During field trip, Vivekanand Environmental Awareness Brigade’s Chandrakant Aukhale and Advt Suraj Malik were resource persons, who guided students and
provided vital information regarding karvi flowers such as bright purple color of plant attracts wild bison, moths and butterflies.
Apart from providing valuable information on Karvi flowers, resource persons also highlighted information of some species seen on the way of trail such as wild guava, bracket mushroom, dayflowers, jino, Begonia etc. Also a session on venomous and other varieties of snakes held at the Mhadei Research Centre during the trip .
