The Chief Minister of Goa, Dr. Pramod Sawant extended his warm greetings to the members of the Press, Print and Electronic Media and the reporting fraternity of Goa on the special occasion of National Press Day. CM expressed his hope that the occasion will reinforce the commitment of the people towards freedom of press.

In his message CM said, “National Press Day is celebrated to commemorate the establishment of the Press Council of India which was formed on November 16, 1966. The Press Council of India has come a long way and proved its worth to maintain high standards expected from it.

“In a democracy, the press performs an important role as a bridge between the government and the people. All journalists should set an ideal for the coming generation, that nation and society are our first priority and one should keep this vital point in mind while moving forward in the field of journalism,” said the CM.

CM further said, “This Day is a symbol of a free and responsible press, which is vital for a healthy and sound democracy. Democracy cannot survive in its rightest sense without a vibrant, fearless and Informative media fraternity. Today, Media is becoming Informative, educative, perspective disseminator and platform for expression. The media fraternity in Goa has grown in leaps and bounds. I appreciate the zeal & hard work of our journalists towards contributing in democratic development of the society acting as a fourth pillar of democracy.”

On this occasion, I appeal to all the media members to be partners in the developmental process of the State. I hope that the occasion will inspire every journalist to maintain the highest standards of constructive news reporting. I also urge the media to take a pledge to promote peace, progress and democratic values in our society. Freedom of the press is one of the most precious privileges that any country has. Let’s commit to using press freedom responsibly and impartially,” CM concluded.
