  4. Amendment to Goa Municipality Act only a move to further BJP’s own political interests: Samil Volvaiker

After the Governor of Goa, P S Sreedharan Pillai, gave his assent and promulgated the Goa Municipalities (Amendment) Ordinance, 2022 (Ordinance 3 of 2022), Goa Trinamool Congress Joint Convenors Samil Volvaiker and Mariano Rodrigues, along with Goa TMC Media Coordinator Trajano D’Mello, strongly opposed the amendments introduced through the ordinance during a press conference at the party office.

Highlighting the Pramod Sawant-led government’s vested interest, Goa TMC Joint Convenor Samil Volvaiker said, ‘The BJP government has yet again attempted to capture power by unfair and undemocratic means. They are desperate to hold power over the municipalities and have proved that they will stop at nothing to further their political ambitions. He further added, ‘The ordinance is nothing more than an attempt by the BJP-led government to sideline the voice of all Goans. The BJP is cheating the people of Goa by orchestrating such trickery. The ordinance is nothing but a move to intimidate and influence the election process.’

Bringing to fore the growing mistrust within the BJP-led government, Volvaiker said, ‘The ordinance only reveals how there’s a lack of trust within the party. They don’t trust their own karyakartas anymore and have resorted to making a mockery of the constitution by tweaking laws.’ Questioning the intentions and objective of such an ordinance he further added, ‘Goa TMC opposes the amendments made as it threatens democracy, rule of law, and the right to free and fair election in the state.’

Shedding light on the upcoming Zilla Parishad elections, Goa TMC Media Coordinator Trajano D’Mello clarified, ‘We have learnt from our mistakes and do not want to field imported candidates just for the sake of it. At the assembly elections we’ve bagged sizeable votes in the present ZP by-elections to be held.’

Speaking on similar lines, Goa TMC Joint Convenor Mariano Rodrigues asserted, ‘We have discussed the matter and came to the conclusion that we must build the party at the grassroots level and instill a sense of confidence amongst the people.’ He further stressed, ‘We are here to win and not just contest elections. Trust TMC we are here to serve the people of Goa.’
