The main concept behind the organization of film festivals is not to show a single type of film, but to show a variety of alternatives, said Nadav Lapid, an Israeli director, writer and chairman of the judging panel of the 53rd IFFI’s international competition section. During the 53rd IFFI, he was speaking at the ‘Table Talks’ program organized by the Correspondence Office.

Nadav Lapid also said that although many film festivals are now organized in a mixed manner, i.e. online and offline, still watching a film on the big screen is a particularly pleasant experience. “Seeing great cinema, together, on the big screen, is one of humanity’s greatest achievements.” He further said that.

Answering a question on how to compare films from IFFI and other film festivals, Nadav Lapid said that each film festival has its own characteristics and is different from others, so it is difficult to compare them. Jury members expressed the opinion that the films selected in the international competition section were of high quality, but at the same time, they agreed that there is always room for improvement when making selections.

Jury member and documentary filmmaker Xavier Angulo Barturen from France commented that he was delighted to see packed halls and so many people discussing cinema at the IFFI. He also advised that the audience should go and watch the movie on the big screen.

To ensure that the best films make it to the festival, a year-round process is needed to hire a permanent programmer, suggests India-based jury member, writer and director Sudipto Sen.

This year, he congratulated the organizers of IFFI for organizing a holistic 360 degree i.e. all-round film festival. “This is the best organized iffy festival I have ever seen. The diversity, colors and presentation of India as a country were all very good. Considering the various aspects of the festivals, I can definitely say that IFFI is at par with many international film festivals. IFFI has matured a lot as a festival,” said Sudipto Sen. He expressed satisfaction that good films on environment and climate change will also be screened at IFFI in the coming years.

Touching on the subject of women’s representation in films, jury member and film editor from France, Pascale Chavans, said, “I saw many great female actors, but they didn’t get the respectable roles that would give them scope.”

American animation filmmaker Jinko Gotoh was also among the jury members of the international competition group. Also participating in the seminar, NFDC Managing Director Ravindra Bakar said that IFFI will also cooperate with the beach cleaning campaign to be launched on the morning of 28 November 2022 at Miramar Beach in Panaji.

Fifteen films are competing for the prestigious Golden Peacock in international competition at this year’s IFFF. In addition to Best Film, the International Competition Jury will select Best Director, Best Actor (Male), Best Actor (Female) and Special Jury Awards. The jury will also select the director’s best debut feature film from a collection of 7 international and Indian fiction feature films.
