Aldona Congress MLA Adv Carlos Alvares Ferreira on Thursday accused the Goa government of systematically compromising and weakening public institutions of repute in Goa in order that private institutions can benefit.
Speaking on the latest Goa University report, which allegedly found a professor guilty of leaking a paper to a favourite student, Adv Carlos said that the state’s sole publicly funded University was being involved in scandal after scandal in order that private universities that want to set up shop in Goa will succeed.
In Goa University, because of politics– deserving candidates are not being given a chance, who then leave and go elsewhere. Why will students come when the ranking slips. Today private universities and deemed universities are rising up the ranks but Goa University’s ranking is degrading. It is degrading because of politics — of two kinds, one to bring your own people — and secondly to bring in people through the back door who will then set up business at the university,” Adv Carlos said.
He cited how village shallas (Marathi medium schools) and parish schools which were once the backbone of Goa’s education system and through which several people passed out and went on to achieve great things, were today neglected, will also happen to Goa University.
“Today the Chief Minister is saying that they (shallas) are shutting down. Whose fault is this?” he asked.
“50% admissions must be compulsory for private universities when the government is arranging the land for them and fees should also be rationalised. Otherwise education has become a commerce. That is why Goa University’s ranking is slipping down and the others will rise and Goa University will be shut down and reduced to only signing degree certificates,” he added.
