PANAJI: Goa Police Public Relations Officer Rahul Gupta (IPS) has announced that the Goa Police have registered a total of 1,232 cases under three newly enacted criminal laws: the Bhartiya Nyaya Sanhita 2023, the Bhartiya Nagrik Suraksha Sanhita 2023, and the Bhartiya Saksha Adhiniyam 2023, which came into effect on July 1, 2024.

In a press release issued by him, he stated that reports for 544 cases have been submitted to the Court under Section 193 of the Bhartiya Nyaya Sanhita upon the conclusion of investigations, while the remaining cases are still under investigation. Trials have been completed in 23 cases, resulting in court judgments.

Of these, 21 cases ended in convictions, while 2 cases resulted in acquittals. Convictions were achieved in 6 cases of theft in a dwelling, 5 cases of auto theft, 3 cases of obstruction in public ways, 2 cases of employee theft, 1 case of kidnapping/rape, and 1 case of causing hurt. Notably, in a case from Mandrem Police Station, case number 42/2024 under Section 305 of the Bhartiya Nyaya Sanhita concerning theft in a dwelling, reported in July 2024, the investigation and trial were concluded within 17 days. The accused, Deepak, son of Pandu Nikam, received an 18-month prison sentence along with a fine. Additionally, under the newly introduced Section 304 of the Bhartiya Nyaya Sanhita pertaining to snatching, a case from Mardol with FIR number 61/2024 resulted in the conviction of the accused, Rajesh Mapari, who was sentenced to 48 days of simple imprisonment.
