The Goa Union of Journalists (GUJ) strongly condemns threat to journalists by Mohan Gaonkar, Sanvordem zilla panchayat (ZP) representative and member of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) during a public function, organised by the Department of Information & Publicity.

Threatening a journalist from a government stage is a direct attack on democracy. To speak such words during an event organised by the Department of Information & Publicity, who look after welfare of journalists, is cowardly and unprecedented.

The two-day Shiv Mahotsav 2026 was held at Satpal ground, Sacorda, Dharbandora.

GUJ demands an immediate apology from Gaonkar and intervention from Chief Minister Pramod Sawant, who holds the Information & Publicity portfolio.

Attempts to intimidate the media in Goa or silence truth will not be tolerated.
