SUGARCANE FARMERS START PROTEST DHARNA AT SANGUEM

SANGUEM: Nearly 200 sugarcane cultivators under the banner of Sugarcane Growers Action Committee from Saturday started their protest dharna in front of the Deputy Collector Office, Sanguem, to seek their pending demands.

The farmers are demanding assured price of Rs 3600 per ton for sugarcane even as Deputy Chief Minister Chandrakant `Babu’ Kavlekar assured to hold a meeting with Chief Minister Pramod Sawant on Tuesday, 5th January.

Deputy Chief Minister who also holds agriculture portfolio met protestors and appealed to them to withdraw their protest stating that the government will settle their demands.

Kavlekar told them that he will convene a meeting of sugarcane farmers with Chief Minister Pramod Sawant at Panaji on Tuesday, 5th January, so as to settle their demands.

However, protestors refused to withdraw their dharna demanding that the government should give them written assurance that they will settle their demands.

Among other demands, sugarcane farmers are demanding suitable compensation for the crop that got wasted in the last season due to closure of Goa’s lone Sanjivani Sugar factory.

Meanwhile, the oa government on Friday released Rs 600 per ton to the sugarcane growers and the process of giving compensation will start by next week.
