PANAJI: Leader of the Opposition Yuri Alemao has urged the state government to stop delaying and enact legislation to eliminate widow discrimination, enabling them to live with dignity.
Cuncolim MLA Yuri Alemao stated that almost two years have passed since his private member’s resolution recommended immediate government action to stop unjust customs of widow discrimination, abuse, and isolation in the state.
“I had raised this issue on 31st March 2023. Today, almost 22 months later, the government continues to assure us that they will bring a law to stop these unjust customs. I was told that once the draft policy on widowhood practices is framed, the government would swiftly introduce legislation. However, the government has failed to keep its word,” Yuri Alemao said.
Alemao noted that village panchayats in Goa have passed resolutions against these outdated and inhuman customs, advocating for widows to be treated equally with married women.
“It is essential to respect the dignity of a person after their death. The prevailing practice of disrobing deceased during funerals is insulting and demeaning to the deceased. The government should consider introducing a law to stop this unjust practice,” Alemao said.
During the recently concluded assembly session, Alemao sought replies from the government on this issue. In response, the government stated that a draft policy on widowhood practices has been framed, and the finalization of same is underway. The government assured that they are working closely on this matter.
“I hope the government will not further delay the process. By the next assembly session, I expect everything to be finalized, and the law to become a reality,” Alemao said.
